The Impact Of New Vaccination Rules On Cheltenham Races 2019 Preparations

Because of the recent equine influenza outbreak, different vaccination rules were set in place. But a Welsh trainer warned that this might affect the plans for Cheltenham races 2019. Formerly, the British Horseracing Authority or BHA requires horses to be vaccinated against the disease in the last 12 months. Today, runners must be inoculated in the past six months before entering the race.

Glamorgan-based trainer Tim Vaughan stated that a booster vaccination could set a horse back for two weeks. He also explained that if the runners weren't vaccinated over the last six months, they need to vaccinate again. If this happens, they wouldn't be able to run for a minimum of six days because they have to rest for a couple of days following the vaccination. This leads them to miss a week of work, and another one for only doing gentle work. Vaughan added that this is not really something ideal to do a few weeks prior to the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Vaughan also has racehorses at the Cheltenham Festival races and he was grateful that he immediately took the right action when the flu crisis started. Each horse in his yard has been given booster flu vaccinations recently so the new requirements do not affect them in any respect. He even said that he doesn’t object regarding the different restrictions that the BHA has put in place because after all, it is for the benefit of the horseracing community as a whole.
